ABSTRACT

EPA Method 6020, in conjunction with EPA Method 200.8, is widely used for the sub-ppm level quantitation of trace elements in waters and wastewaters. The method itself has undergone several revisions since its conception in 1994 and, similarly, ICP-MS instrumentation has greatly evolved since that time. For example, software interface, hardware maintenance, and data reduction have been made far simpler. Furthermore, the innovation of collision and collision/reaction cell technologies have enhanced the utility of ICP-MS for difficult analytes and matrices.

Shimadzu’s ICPMS 2030 is a newly-developed single quadrupole ICP-MS instrument that incorporates collision cell technology for polyatomic interference removal. The ICPMS 2030 is capable of meeting or exceeding requirements of Method 6040 as they pertain to elements analyzed and their sensitivity. The primary benefits of the Shimadzu 2030 over similar instruments for environmental analysis are lower cost of ownership, ease of use and maintenance, and capabilities for rapid sample throughput. During analysis, the ICPMS 2030 consumes ~10 L of argon per minute, which is 33 to 50% less than comparable instruments. Furthermore, the cross-platform LabSolutions software package offers ease of use, method development and data analysis ‘wizard’ functions, and, because it’s built on the familiar LabSolutions platform, simple transition from other Shimadzu instruments to ICPMS. Lastly, sample throughput can be improved using a modified sample introduction flow-path that can increase throughput by 50%.
