Owen Butler

Owen is an analytical chemist at the UK Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) with a twenty-four year background in trace element analysis, aerosol science, air sampling, and laboratory proficiency testing services. He is the technical knowledge lead for inorganic measurements at HSL supplying the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the wider air monitoring community with measurement advice and services. Current research interests include the development and validation of sampling and analytical methods for elemental/inorganic species such as acid gases, carbon (diesel fume), mercury (and other metal(oid) species) and silica in workplace and the wider air environment. Work carried out at HSL has largely been disseminated through developing (or assisting others in developing) standard methods at UK National (HSE MDHS series), European (EN standards) and International (ISO, ASTM standards) levels.

He has responsibility as technical lead for proficiency testing services and represents HSL on various BSI, UKAS and Eurachem committees associated with external quality assurance activities (PT and reference materials).

He is an executive member of the atomic spectrometry reviews (www.asureviews.org), a group of international chemists that prove six authoritative reviews on the developments and use of atomic spectrometry and related techniques and which are published bimonthly in the UK Royal Society of Chemistry’s Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry.
